In a narrow gallery in the heart of brick lane, a venue pulsed with musicians, artists, designers and art lovers alike and LOOCH were invited to uncover Under The Roof's newest venture- Crèche Sessions. Under tall ceilings artists convened in the centre, sketching all they could see and experience. LOOCH explored the journey that brought Under The Roof and its plethora of artists into the cosy and casual setting filled with all things art.

In one of the smallest venues they’ve hosted in, we had the privilege to meet the minds behind crèche sessions. Founded in 2024, Under The Roof provide a space for up and coming artists of all mediums to create, experiment, and network. Having previously hosted large scale events, crèche sessions, as Joshua, one third of the genius behind this session, told LOOCH, is about a casual, relaxed environment focusing on the process of an artist rather than the final piece. As we spoke, artists had convened behind us to draw, a waistcoat was being hand-stitched in the corner and a collective launched into their participation exhibit all the while a mismatched group of musicians began their harmonious debut.

In a dimly lit corner, deep in concentration was Daniel. Russian-born Daniel Khatz dove into the world of fashion at age 15 creating his own outfit for a giveaway on his Youtube channel he started with friends. Making a garment that he wants with his own hands was the driving force behind his entrance into the fashion industry, his clothes embrace the ideas of the forgotten, taking inspiration from the wide abandoned world around him. For him, the love of textiles comes from the process, as we talked he worked in his crowded corner on garments, hand-stitching a waistcoat using thread as embellishment, for Daniel he wants to show what was not supposed to be seen in his creative process.

Honouring the ancient figures who act as bridges between worlds Angaqquk Collective are a multidisciplinary artist group that combine performance, sound, and movement into living rituals. Coming from backgrounds in dance and theatre, Kristina, Alina, and Iv, guided by the raw impulses of the body, displayed an immersive performance inviting audiences into a liminal realm using sound, touch and movement. For this collective ‘Art is healing, and healing means turning yourself inside out’.

For Hyunah painting is more that just a visual medium, it is tactile, it is memories stored and it is ever changing. ‘By Simply opening wherever it may be’ was on display behind us as she walked us through the creative process behind such a showstopping piece. Drawing inspiration from Korean cicada’s Hyunah takes us back 15 years ago, an event of her childhood with a cicada triggers her every summer to pick up the paintbrush and transfer her emotions into palpable works of art through clay, acrylic, and oil ink. When asked what message she has for aspiring painters, it was to imagine an empty room and what sound this room would make. Whatever this may be transform it into art of any medium.

Jaden, Zosia, Daniel, and Eleanor had not played as a collective before this event, yet their multitude of instruments filled the room with a fitting harmonious impression. Through Crèche sessions, the mismatched group of guitarist, keyboardist, sax player, and composition found a relaxed environment to experiment in and explore their passion of music free from the typical structured jam sessions.

The premier crèche session brought together passionate artists from across the globe to demonstrate the art of the process. The exuberance in which the artists LOOCH spoke to about their projects reflects the importance of organisations such as this. Being given a space to network, create, and exhibit is a much needed idea to allow emerging artists to pursue their passions. In a message to up and coming artists, organiser Joshua, welcomes them with open arms into a space that was created for artists to convene all under one roof.

Keep an eye on @under_the__roof socials for the newest updates on upcoming crèche sessions, hosted every six weeks.
